Our Comments
“Some descriptions pissed me off. They didn’t seem to take art seriously. It was upsetting. I love the wall harp I wish it was a dulcimer. I’d like to see more realism THAT ISNT PHOTOGRAPHY”

Our Reaction:
Thank you for all of the feedback. We feel that a truly great art show doesn’t always have people in agreement or even people leaving happy. Instead it provokes thought and causes discussion.
In response to some of the comments:
“Some descriptions pissed me off. They didn’t seem to take art seriously. It was upsetting. “
The artists’ bios and descriptions were written by the artists themselves. However, we have decided that these descriptions should be written by someone else for consistency and to provide an interpretation from a viewer’s perspective.”
We would also like to invite anyone who felt like some style or medium was underrepresented to submit a piece to the gallery. We tried to include an equal representation of every style that was submitted to the gallery.

The Artery's Background
Founded in the fall of 2009 by Hallie Ringle, Natalia Davila and Gavin Hackeling, the Artery is a gallery for and by students at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Located in a donated storefront that formerly housed a bar, the Artery was transformed into a gallery space in a few weeks through the efforts of a dedicated group of students and contributions from the community. Twenty artists submitted nearly one hundred pieces to be considered for the first show. On November 6 the Artery opened its doors to an enthusiastic public for the first time.

Call for Submissions
The Artery is a gallery for students by students founded by Kappa Pi Art and Art History Honors Society at UNC. We are currently looking for submissions for the grand opening of the gallery Friday, November 6. All media is welcomed and all students, from any department, are encouraged to apply! This is a wonderful opportunity to display and sell your artwork! We are also looking for students for a selection committee and students to volunteer in the gallery. If you are interested in submitting art work, volunteering, or participating in the selection committee, please email us at thestudentartery@gmail.com.

Statement of Intent
Statement of Purpose
The student gallery on 100 East Franklin Street, tentatively called the Artery, has been established by members of the Kappa Pi Art and Art History Honorary Fraternity as a public venue for displaying work, particularly by undergraduate artists. The gallery is non-profit; for each sale the artist will receive the majority of the proceeds, a commission will be paid to the owner of the property, and the remainder will be given to Kappa Pi for maintenance of the gallery space. Additionally, the gallery will provide a venue for arts collaboration with other groups on campus and in the community. Student Friends of the Ackland has expressed interest in curating a show, and the gallery will be involved in events like the Second Friday Art Walk.
The gallery represents a valuable opportunity for students; Studio Art majors will have an opportunity to exhibit their work and Art History majors will have an opportunity to design exhibits or work in a gallery. The Art Department’s two majors are viewed by many students as distant and autonomous. The gallery could provide a means for students from both majors to work together and with involved faculty and artists in the community.
